Description

Staggering, oversized portrait, signed to the photographer during a visit to Cal Tech

Almost unbelievable oversized vintage matte-finish 14 x 18 portrait of Einstein in 1931, taken by E. Willard Spurr of Pasadena, California (noted as such in white ink near the lower border). Signed and inscribed in fountain pen to the photographer, “To Mr. E. W. Spurr, Albert Einstein 1931.” Einstein’s signature is light but legible, scattered light silvering, visible only at an angle, a bit of minor edge wear, and a few surface marks to background, otherwise fine condition.

This crystal clear image was signed during Einstein’s six-week visit to Cal Tech in Pasadena, California. During his time on campus, Einstein attended various lectures in astronomy and astrophysics as well as delivering a lecture on his Unified Field Theory, which he had been working on since 1915. Relatively speaking, this is a rare and truly spectacular signed image! Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
