Original sepia 6.75 x 10 oversized cabinet portrait by C. M. Bell of Washington, D.C., boldly signed by Arthur as president in the lower portion of the image in black ink. In very good to fine condition, with light overall foxing, a bit of fading to the image, and some scattered toning to lower border, nothing detracting from the bold signature and otherwise handsome appearance.
This generally well-known image was taken in 1882 by Charles Milton Bell during Arthur’s first full year in office. Bell was the youngest member of a family of photographers who operated a studio in Washington, D.C. Arthur is uncommon in signed photographs, and virtually unobtainable in signed photos of this unusual size. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
