Description

A month before “Babe Ruth Day,” the gravely ill Bambino signs a classic pose

Vintage matte-finish 8 x 10 photo of Ruth wearing a long-sleeve athletic shirt and Yankee pinstripe pants, swinging a bat, most probably taken in the early 1930s in St. Petersburg, Florida, during the New York Yankees spring training, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To my good friend Jack Musante, Sincerely, Babe Ruth 3-12-47.” Archivally triple cloth matted and framed to an overall size of 15 x 18. In very good condition, with some scattered light foxing and spotting, small crease to lower left edge, and some mild silvering to darker areas of image and background; the top of the wood frame shows some discoloration.

A total of 714 home runs, but who knows how many more in batting practice? Was this one of them? It’s difficult to tell from the expression on the Bambino’s face…let’s face it, when you slam that many homers, the thrill probably wears off. Ruth is looking pretty good in this image, taken during his playing days, but the date adds a somber tone. A month later, a cancer-stricken Ruth spoke before 60,000 fans at a “Babe Ruth Day” ceremony at Yankee Stadium. His raspy voice praised the National Pastime, “the only real game in the world—baseball.” Ruth passed away in 1948. A magnificent pose from a melancholy year. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
