Description

A presidential rarity: Garfield, signed and dated in office

Large ink signature, signed and dated as president, “James A. Garfield, April 16, 1881,” on an off-white card. Attractively archivally double suede matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Garfield, to an overall size of 19.25 x 13.5. In fine condition, with all writing a shade light but entirely, easily readable.

The nation—the world—was stunned less than three months later when, in a Washington railroad station, an embittered attorney who was rejected for a political appointment shot Garfield. The wounded president lay in the White House for weeks as physicians treated him. Inventor Alexander Graham Bell tried unsuccessfully to locate the slug with an electrical device he had designed. On September 6, Garfield was taken to the New Jersey seaside, where, for a few days, he seemed to be recuperating. The rally was short-lived, however, and on September 19, 1881, he died from an infection and internal hemorrhaging. A beautifully displayed example of one of the real rarities of presidential autograph collecting. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
