Description

“I am keeping it a dark secret from the press”

Lengthy ALS signed “Audrey,” four onionskin pages, 5.75 x 8.5, September 12, 1954. Letter to her good friend Anita Loos, asking her to attend her upcoming wedding to actor Mel Ferrer. In part, “This is to tell you how I wish from the bottom of my heart that you could be here on my beautiful mountain top, with me…where Mel [Ferrer] and I are getting married. We are doing it very quietly and informally in the tiny chapel up here…I would understand so completely if you preferred not to be here, also I know I am asking too much for you to come all this way…The Grand Hotel would roll out the red carpet for you…May I humbly beg you not to speak to anyone of my wedding…as I am keeping it a dark secret from the press.” In fine condition. Hepburn met Ferrer at a party hosted by Gregory Peck. Ferrer later sent Hepburn the script for the play Ondine and Hepburn agreed to play the role. Rehearsals started in January of 1954 and Hepburn and Ferrer were married on September 24, 1946. Hepburn claimed that they were inseparable and were very happy together, despite the insistence from gossip columns that the marriage would not last. She did, however, admit that he had a bad temper. Ferrer was rumoured to be too controlling of Hepburn and was called her Svengali. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
