Description

Scarce MacArthur signed surrender photo

Vintage glossy 6.25 x 4.75 photo of MacArthur overseeing the Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri, signed in fountain pen. Suede matted and framed to an overall size of 14.5 x 14. In very good condition, with scattered surface marks, wrinkles, and creases, a few lightly affecting signature, and signature a few shades light, but still completely legible.

Japan had formally agreed to the terms of surrender two weeks earlier, but it was on September 2, 1945, that the Japanese delegation met the Allied representatives aboard the Missouri which was anchored in Tokyo Bay. MacArthur, Supreme Allied Commander, led the Allied delegation. Years of fighting and bloodshed were ended in a half an hour. After the Japanese surrender, MacArthur's first directive in Tokyo was to raise the American flag over the American Embassy there. At the flag-raising ceremony, he commented, "We stand in Tokyo today, reminiscent of our countryman, Commodore Perry, 92 years ago. His purpose was to bring to Japan an era of enlightenment and progress...It is my purpose." The first MacArthur-signed example of this iconic image we’ve ever encountered. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
