Description

Reagan jokingly foreshadows his eventual Alzheimers: “Number one--you can find yourself forgetting things and, and -- I can’t remember the other two”

TLS as president signed “Dutch,” one page, 7 x 10.5, White House letterhead, May 17, 1988. Letter to his long-time friend Lydia “Hup” MacArthur. In part: “I’m sorry I’ve been so remiss in writing. Put it down to old Father Time and all the wheels that are going around every day here in this job. I have a little story that goes with my years—you know I’m not playing juveniles myself anymore. The idea is to say: ‘There are three things that are signs of advancing age. Number one--you can find yourself forgetting things and, and -- I can’t remember the other two.’” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.

Lydia Hupfer “Hup” MacArthur was the widow of Pete MacArthur, program director of WOC in Davenport, Iowa. In 1932, MacArthur had given a then 21 year-old Reagan his first job as a sports announcer. They would remain friends until her passing at the age of 102 in 1995. In fine condition. Six years later, Reagan would be diagnosed with Alzheimers, writing his memorable letter to the American public in which he stated, “I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life.” Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
