American statesman (1782 -1866) who served variously as Governor of Michigan, Senator, Ambassador to France, Secretary of War, and Secretary of State. ALS signed “L. Cass,” one page, 4.25 x 7, December 16, 1845. Letter to former U. S. Charge d’Affaires to Britain Aaron Vail. In part: “We have this moment heard of the death of Gen. Jackson, and it appears to us that our feelings shall not allow us to go out at this time.” Letter is affixed to an identical size sheet. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, scattered light brushing to text and signature, light overall toning, and some light wrinkling from adhesive on reverse. Interesting to note that the letter is dated December of 1845 while Jackson died over six months earlier in June. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
