Born Maffeo Barberini, he was Pope from 1623 to 1644. He was the last Pope to expand the papal territory by force of arms, and was a prominent patron of the arts and reformer of Church missions. LS in Italian, signed “M. Card. Baberinus,” one page, 8 x 11, 1622. Neatly penned untranslated letter. Adjoining second page bears an address panel in another hand, as well as the intact paper seal. Double cloth matted and framed with a portrait of a bust of Urban VIII, to an overall size of 23 x 25. In very good to fine condition, with light haloing to text and signature, scattered light toning and foxing, and light mirroring of ink to both pages. Oversized. RRAuction COA.
