Description

Sharing Christmas fudge with “all the greedy people…in my family”

ALS signed “Elizabeth R,” one page both sides, 6 x 8.25, Sandringham letterhead, January 2, 1990. Elizabeth sends holiday thanks to Miss MacGregor. In part: “Thank you for a very popular Christmas present, which arrived in good time! This year I put it on the piano in the hall here which is a mecca for all the greedy people, young and old, in my family! So we have all been sharing it. With so many different ages it has been great fun here for Christmas, especially watching the little ones enjoying themselves…Thank you again for your present of fudge which is so appreciated.” A few faint smudges to text, otherwise clean, fine condition.

With all of the pomp and circumstance surrounding the British royal family, it can be easy to forget that Queen Elizabeth is also the grandmother of eight children, including the future King of England, Prince William. During the holiday in reference here, William was a mere 8-year-old boy, with his younger brother Harry only 6. One can barely imagine the scene of Charles and Diana putting aside their difference to share some fudge with their eager children, yet that is precisely the image conjured by this bit of correspondence. A unique item that brings a sense of “humanity” to the otherwise staid monarch. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
