Description

Signed in the year he almost reached the South Pole

Junior officer in Scott’s National Antarctic Expedition of 1901–02, Shackleton (1874–1922) nearly reached the South Pole during an expedition of his own in 1909, in the process becoming a national hero. In 1915, during another expedition, his ship, Endurance, was crushed in the polar ice, and he and five others made a perilous journey of 1300 miles to bring relief for the stranded crew. Vintage 3.5 x 5.25 photo of Shackleton resting his head on his fist, affixed to its original 4.75 x 7 Memutt Larony photographer’s mount, signed on the mount in fountain pen, “Yours very sincerely, Ernest H. Shackleton 1909.” Moderate overall silvering to image, and a somewhat rough right edge to mount, otherwise fine condition.

Shackleton signed this image the same year that he and three companions nearly made history on their own by coming within 112 miles from the South Pole on January 9, along the way discovering the Beardmore Glacier and becoming the first persons to travel on the South Polar Plateau. Facing starvation on their return trip, Shackleton and his crew arrived at their designated rendezvous point just in time to catch their ship. The expedition's other accomplishments included the first ascent of Mount Erebus, and the discovery of the approximate location of the South Magnetic Pole. Shackleton returned to the United Kingdom as a hero, and soon afterwards published his expedition account, entitled The Heart of the Antarctic. A piercing pose, signed and dated the very year he made Antarctic history. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
