Description

During his first full year in office, Hayes sends thanks for “sympathy and approval”

ALS as president signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page, 4.5 x 7, Executive Mansion letterhead, July 10, 1877. Letter to Hon. Ch. Lauman in Georgetown. In full: “I have received your note of the 8th, and thank you for it. Your sympathy and approval give me great gratification. I trust that your summer trip to the North was in every way prosperous and that I may meet you on your return.” In fine condition, with a uniform shade of light toning, and a few scattered creases.

The 1876 presidential election was one of the most disputed contests in American history. Samuel J. Tilden of New York out-polled Ohio's Rutherford B. Hayes in the popular vote, and had 184 electoral votes to Hayes' 165, with 20 votes uncounted. Many historians believe that an informal deal was struck to resolve the dispute, known as the Compromise of 1877, in which the Republicans agreed to withdraw federal troops from the South, ending Reconstruction, in return for the Democrats conceding defeat. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
