Description

Rare signature mark of Seneca Indian Chief Cornplanter with impeccable 1791 authentication

Gaiänt'wakê (or Kaintwakon, generally known as Cornplanter), was a Seneca war chief (1750-1836). Ink mark in lieu of signature, "X," with written authentication in another hand, "This Corn Planter Mark from my Grand Father's Diary 1791 F. H. Baldwin,” on an off-white 3.75 x 1.5 slip, which in turn is affixed to a page 6 x 2.25 slip. Scattered mild toning and soiling, otherwise fine condition.

F.H. Baldwin most certainly beheld this family treasure as a remarkable one—and a keepsake with a fascinating story. Waterman Baldwin, presumably the grandfather of F.H., was the original owner of this unique gem. A larger-than-life hero if ever there was, the exploits of “Watt” Baldwin during the Revolutionary War earned him favor with General Washington, who employed Baldwin as his trusted messenger. In fact, Baldwin was so highly regarded by the American general that the popular courier was presented by several of Washington’s men with a silver mounted saddle and a faithful steed (“Roanoke”). One popular yarn has it that Baldwin was thrice captured by Native American forces, who themselves were impressed by his incredible daring. It was during his last capture that it was decided that Baldwin was to be burned alive. As this awful ceremony was to proceed, Baldwin, unruffled even in the face of death, shook hands with several of his captors. Reportedly, just as he was about to grasp the hand of famous Indian Chief Cornplanter, the Native American leader was overcome by an overwhelming sentiment of mercy. Not only did Cornplanter order Baldwin’s release, but he inexplicably adopted “Watt” as his son. Thus resplendent with such immense historical significance—and boasting ideal provenance—the offered item is truly fantastic. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
