Knockout vintage sepia glossy 7.25 x 9 Apeda Studios portrait of Corbett in a jacket and tie, boldly and beautifully signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To my friend H. S. Hera with best regards, Jas. J. Corbett, Apr. 27/30.” Apeda Studios became the primary metropolitan photographer of boxers and baseball players as well as a publicity manufacturer for Broadway performers. In fine condition, with adhesive residue to top edge from previous framing, scattered surface impressions and a few minor creases. Almost 40 years after he knocked out John L. Sullivan in the 21st round to become the Heavyweight Champion of the World, Corbett was still popular. From an article headlined “James Corbett Still In Athletic Limelight” in “The Hartford Courant,” October 19, 1930: “The champion of another century and still going strong. He’s outlived them all. When he takes over the microphone everyone listens. When he writes a magazine article everyone reads. When he appears on the stage everyone hustles around to get a good seat.” Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
