Description

Lafayette introduces John Quincy Adams to General Guglielmo Pepe, who hopes “to serve the Italian cause by an exertion in Europe”

ALS signed “Lafayette,” one page, 7.25 x 9.25, May 14, 1824. Two months before his triumphant final visit to the United States, Lafayette sends a letter to Secretary of State John Quincy Adams, introducing the important military leader, General Guglielmo Pepe. In full: “Although I hope to be personally the introducer of General Pepe to my American friends, and altho his own illustrious character is the best introduction he can ever receive, I will not run the chance of his coming near you without a line from me. Had he any immediate hope to serve the Italian cause by an exertion in Europe, he would not think at this moment to visit the U. S. but situated as matters now are he intends to embark in a short time from England for America and I beg leave, while he recommends himself so well by his grace and good qualities, to add this particular recommendation of a personal friend.” Second integral page bears an address panel in Lafayette’s hand. Several intersecting mailing folds, otherwise fine, clean condition.

This single document links revolutionary leaders from the United States, France, and Italy! America, of course, was forged from the Revolutionary War, and Lafayette was a hero in both the American and French revolutions. General Pepe, the Italian army officer and patriot who also served in Napoleon’s army tried in his own right to improve conditions in Italy by participating in a failed rebellion in 1821. The failure sent him into exile, though his resolve remained strong, as evidenced by Lafayette’s endorsement here. This correspondence serves as an interesting connection between the young United States and a general who hoped to enact similar change in his own homeland.
