Description

Brokenhearted Rockefeller acknowledges condolences following the loss of his wife of 50 years

Fabled American entrepreneur (1839–1937) who entered the oil industry at the age of 24 and worked ruthlessly to unify his business interests into the powerful Standard Oil Trust. TLS, one page, 6 x 7.75, personal letterhead, March 16, 1915. Brief letter of thanks to H. C. Ditmer of Cleveland. In full: “Please be assured I am very appreciative of your most kind and sympathetic message.” Accompanied by an unsigned Pach Bros. portrait of Rockefeller, trimmed to a size of 5 x 7. In very good condition, with three horizontal mailing folds and a block of moderate overall toning from previous display. Rockefeller’s signature remains large and legible.

Ditmer, superintendent of a Sunday school in Cleveland and a long-time friend, forwarded his condolences to Rockefeller following the death of oil magnate’s wife, Laura Celestia Spelman Rockefeller, on March 12, 1915, with this correspondence dated the day after Mrs. Rockefeller’s funeral at Pocantico Hills. Rockefeller was in Florida with his son when he learned that his wife had suffered a fatal heart attack. Just six months earlier, the couple had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. “Cettie” Rockefeller was the namesake of Spelman College and the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
