Hawaii's longest-reigning monarch who reigned from 1824 to 1854. Partly-printed DS, in Hawaiian and English, signed “Kamehameha,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 8.5 x 14, March 21, 1854. Interesting document, filled in in Hawaiian, with the English portions remaining blank, in which Kamehameha III signs a land grant for 53 acres in Hilo, a coastal town on the island. Document also bears a sketch, presumably of the topography of the land. In very good condition, with scattered toning and soiling, splits along previous storage folds, light toning, and light mirroring of red wax seal.
Kamehameha III was only 10 years old when, in 1824, he became King of Hawaii. At times during his historic rule, His Highness was in conflict with the Christian missionaries who came to Hawaii. Their biggest issue was that the King’s one true love was Princess Nahienaena: his sister. This document was signed as Kamehameha neared the end of his tenure as the longest-serving Hawaiian monarch.
