Description

Hendrix visits a famous London record shop on the eve of recording one of the greatest songs of all time

Check, 5.25 x 3.5, filled out and signed by Hendrix, payable to One Stop Records for £15.15.00, and dated January 20, 1968. Hendrix also fills in the bank branch, “Martins Edgeware Rd.” Beautifully and removably mounted with clear corner tabs and framed with a photocopy of Hendrix’s bank account, showing the check as being issued and cashed and a color photo of Hendrix on stage, to an overall size of 35 x 15. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA. Bank stamp to body, red ink strokes through three letters of signature and a small notation to top, otherwise fine condition.

One Stop Records, located on Dean Street in London, was considered by many to be the hippest record store in the world. It sold imports, hard-to-find 45 rpm singles, bootlegs, and was even rumored to be a place to find a quick marijuana fix. It’s no surprise that Hendrix would choose such a place to do his music shopping. As Hendrix would head into Olympic Studios the next day with Brian Jones and Dave Mason to begin to record “All Along the Watchtower,” this check leads to some conjecture of Hendrix’s purchase at the record store, even perhaps picking up a copy of Dylan’s John Wesley Harding for transcribing the lyrics. This is the first Hendrix check we have ‘experienced,’ with much more writing in Hendrix’s hand then we are used to seeing on any signed item. A classic rock rarity! Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RRAuction COA.
