ALS, one page, lightly-lined, 5 x 8, New York Tribune letterhead, May 31, 1872. Letter marked “private” to an unknown recipient. In full: “I rejoice that I am not rich, for if I were I might be compelled to give or lend money where it would seem to be intended to purchase political favor. It is possible that I may be chosen president quite possible that I may not be; but in either case none shall say that I purchased his support.” Letter is affixed to an 8 x 11.5 off-white sheet. In very good condition, with trimmed lower left corner, some mild toning, and light overall rippling from adhesive on reverse. RRAuction COA.
