Description

At the dawn of the space program seventeen participants, including Armstrong, Aldrin, Bean, and Von Braun, sign from highly secretive Mercury, Nevada

Four commemorative covers, all postmarked from Mercury, Nevada, signed by a total of 17 astronauts, prominent scientists, and notables from the secretive and classified Nevada installation wherein rocketry and nuclear experimentation took place. First cover, postmarked February 17, 1965, is signed vertically in ballpoint by Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Dave Scott, Dick Gordon, Rusty Schweickart, Bill Anders, and Raymond Ledekar; second cover, postmarked February 25, 1965, is signed in ballpoint by Don Eisele, Alan Bean, Charles Bassett II, Gene Cernan, Clifton Williams, Jr., Michael Collins, and Walt Cunningham; third cover, postmarked March 3, 1965, is signed in ballpoint by Elliot See and Roger Chaffee; and fourth cover, postmarked May 17, 1965, is signed in ink by Werner von Braun. In overall fine condition.

The rough terrain of Mercury, Nevada, part of the Nevada Test Site, gave astronauts who were training for the Apollo moon mission a taste of the “lunar landscape.” At the time, little attention was paid to the footprints left in the dusty soil…that honor was saved for many of the men detailed within this collection. Pre-certified Scott Cornish and RRAuction COA.
