Description

“Gentleman Jim” lives up to his name

Vintage pearl-finish 7 x 9 photo of Corbett looking gentlemanly in a suit and tie, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To my friend Ernest Emerlins, with warmest regards from Jas. J. Corbett Feb 4/28.” Matted and framed with a photo of Corbett in the ring with Bob Fitzsimmons, and a cigarette card of Corbett, to an overall size of 12.25 x 17. In fine condition, with some scattered light creasing and a few areas of emulsion irregularity at bottom edge.

By 1928, Corbett had traded fisticuffs for film, appearing in such low-budget offerings as The Other Girl, The Midnight Man, and The Beauty Shop. The image of Corbett in the ring with Fitzsimmons serves as a nice juxtaposition, as well, as it was that battle that lost Gentleman Jim his championship status and essentially marked the beginning of the end of the boxing career while paving the way to Hollywood. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
