Signature of ‘The Boston Strong Boy’

Boxer known as the Boston Strong Boy. Fighting on turf and with bare knuckles, Sullivan became the heavyweight champion of the world under the London Prize Ring rules by defeating Paddy Ryan on February 7, 1882. Ten years later, on September 7, 1892, he lost the championship to James J. Corbett under the new Queensberry rules. Vintage ink signature, “Compliments of John L. Sullivan, May 14th, 1909,” on an off-white 3.5 x 2.25 slip. Matted and framed with an original cabinet photo of Sullivan in his prime by Wood Studios in New York, and a cigarette card with an image of Sullivan battling Kilrain, to an overall size of 12.25 x 17. In fine condition, with a bit of scattered light soiling. A crisp, and clean example. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
