Flight-flown American flag, 5.75 x 4, flown aboard Skylab during 1973 -1974. Flag is affixed to a 14 x 11 presentation certificate which reads, “Presented to Stanley E. Jacobsen, for your ‘extra effort’ in making the Skylab missions successful.” To the left is an image of Skylab, with printed mission emblems underneath. Signed in the lower left by Charles Conrad, Joe Kerwin, and Ed Gibson, with six other pre-printed astronaut signatures. In fine condition.
Viewed at the time as the next step in space exploration, Skylab, a science and engineering laboratory, was launched into Earth orbit in May 1973. Three crews of three men visited the station, with their missions lasting 28, 59, and 84 days. A wealth of astronomy experiments were done during Skylab’s lifetime, which ended when it fell from orbit in July 1979. Jacobsen, the recipient of this certificate, had worked for NASA for more than 30 years prior to his retirement. He died in 2002.
With all of the equipment, experiments, and people assigned to fly into space, there is precious little room for anything that falls under the heading “souvenir.” When such an item does make it onboard, it rarely leaves the hands of the intended recipient upon its return. This Skylab-flown flag is one of the longer-duration space flight items we have seen.
