Description

O’Keeffe marvels on one of her greatest inspirations

Highly regarded American artist (1887–1986) best known for her sensuous, large-scale paintings of flowers, images from the natural world, and the American southwest. ALS signed “G,” one page, 8.5 x 11, February 9, 1954. Letter to “Brownie.” In full: “I must tell you that yesterday some one brought me an elk head—white and beautiful—6 point horns making it stand about 60 inches high and 48 inches across. It is really astonishing.” Accompanied by back of the original mailing envelope, signed “Georgia O’Keeffe, Abiquiu, N.M.” In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds.

During 1930s, O’Keeffe began spending most of her summers in New Mexico. In addition to painting pictures of desert flowers and the high rocky hills, she collected the dry, white animal bones scattered over the desert and had as many as she could shipped to Lake George so that she could study and paint the bones later; one of her most famous paintings is that of a ram’s skull. O’Keeffe’s fascination with nature is evident in this correspondence, and the New Mexico return address is a nice connection to her techniques of the largeness of subject and richness of color.  Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
