Description

The Yankee Clipper and The Cinderella Man

Vintage 3.5 x 5.5 Inn Braddock’s Corner postcard photo of Braddock striking a pugilistic pose, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To Tom, Best wishes, Jimmy Braddock,” and “Best wishes, J. DiMaggio.” Photo also bears a facsimile signature and sentiment. In very good condition, with scattered light toning and spotting, with a heavier circle over portion of image (affecting appearance) and Braddock’s signature, and a small surface ding to center of image.

Braddock and DiMaggio were friends (introduced by the boxer’s manager, Joe Gould, who allegedly instructed the Yankee Clipper on 1930s nightlife in the Big Apple). It is not out of the question, then, that the athletes socialized together. When Joe D. was not at Toots Shor’s Restaurant in Manhattan, he may have been hanging out with “The Cinderella Man” at his New York City eatery, the cleverly named Inn Braddock’s Corner, which is likely where the original owner of this souvenir cornered his subjects with pen in hand! A scarce combination of two sports legends. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
