Welles agrees to appear on The Masquers Radio Program for a salary of $2500, agreeing to rehearsals, and allowing his name and likeness to be used in advertising. Signed at the conclusion in blue fountain pen. A small rider is attached to the front, giving Welles the right of approval of material, as well as a potential salary adjustment. In very good condition, with punch holes to top edge, staples along left edge, scattered light toning and creasing, and several pencil notations.
The Masquers Club became a symbol of thespian fellowship during the Golden Age of Hollywood and beyond. Broadcast on KNX in Los Angeles beginning 1940, the program was genuine melding of camaraderie and talent, with the close-knit fraternity holding forth at a unique clubhouse in Hollywood for over five decades. Despite this signed legal document, there is no record of Welles ever appearing on the program, as news of the first atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945, surely would have interrupted such scheduled entertainment. A second bomb, dropped on Nagasaki, Japan on August 9, and the subsequent Japanese surrender to end World War II, further occupied the airwaves in the days that followed.
