Description

Promoting the film Can-Can on a 1960 episode of the Arthur Murray Party

DS, two pages, 8.5 x 11, February 23, 1960. Agreement between Mansfield and 20th Century Fox Film Corporation for Mansfield to appear on the Arthur Murray Party TV show, agreeing to cause an announcement be made for the upcoming CinemaScope picture Can-Can, in return for which Mansfield will receive $2500.00. Signed on the second page in blue ink by Mansfield. A mild shade of toning to first page, as well as paperclip marks, creasing, and small notation, and staple holes and small paper loss to both top left corners, otherwise fine condition.

Photos of Mansfield in the February 1960 issue of Playboy magazine had just hit the stands when the buxom actress was asked to appear on the Arthur Murray Party, an ABC-TV variety show that ran from 1950 to 1960. The show was hosted by famous dancers Arthur and Kathryn Murray, and was essentially one long advertisement for their chain of dance studios. Mansfield’s appearance came on March 15, 1960, in an episode now titled The Arthur Murray Special for Bob Hope. Her deal to promote Can-Can, a 1960 musical that starred Shirley MacLaine, Frank Sinatra, and Juliet Prowse in her first film role, may have helped the production become the second top-grossing film of the year. That stipulation in the contract, however, is rather confusing as Mansfield did not appear in the film. What is not confusing, of course, is that her curves were drawing plenty of attention!
