Signed book: African Game Trails. Later printing. NY: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1910. Hardcover, 6.5 x 9.5, 529 pages. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page, “To Col. J. J. Asser, with all good wishes from Theodore Roosevelt, Nov. 1st, 1910.” Several notations, faint foxing, and light edge toning to signed page, as well as a small clipping taped to bottom, partial separation along hinges, light discoloration, soiling, and fading to covers, sunning to spine, and spine a bit weak, otherwise very good condition.
The original recipient of this tome, J. J. Asser, was a British army officer and Adjutant General of the Sudan, and his kindness during TR’s expedition is referenced on page 444 of the book. Roosevelt's safari to Africa, on which 512 animals were bagged, was one of the highlights of an already eventful life, and the expedition formed the basis for this popular adventure. Nearly a century later, the text is still considered a classic safari narrative, with this particular copy presented to a man who was there! Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
