Description

The Financier of the American Revolution and the company that placed him in financial ruins

Pennsylvania-born signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution (1734–1806). Partly-printed DS, signed “Robt. Morris,” one page, 12.5 x 9.5, June 4, 1795. Certificate issued to Dr. James Tate for “five shares in the entire property of the North American Land Company, the Dividend whereof shall not be less than Six Dollars on each share annually.” Very boldly signed at the conclusion by Morris as president of the company. In very good condition, with scallop-trimmed left edge, slight ink erosion to beginning of signature, several other small holes, scattered light toning and foxing, and creasing to edges.

Once one of the best known merchants in the Colonies whose reputation was enough to secure the necessary funding for the American Revolution, Morris ran into some tough times in the newly-formed United States of America. Following the war, a grateful government gave Morris large tracts of land, which he transformed into the North American Land Company, from which this document originated. The company failed in 1798, however, because projected revenue did not come in quickly enough to meet loan and tax deadlines, causing Morris to end up in debtors' prison from 1798 to 1801. An interesting link between the Financier of the American Revolution and his eventual economic failure. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
