ALS signed “Babe” on the correspondence side of a 5.5 x 3.5 postcard of a Mexican bullfight, no date but postmarked May 20, 1946. Brief letter to James Donahue’s Bar and Grill in New Jersey. Ruth writes: “Nice country Mexico. Good weather and everything.” Ruth has also addressed the postcard. Encapsulated in a plastic PSA/DNA authentication holder. In good condition, with moderate toning and soiling to correspondence side, postmark over end of signature, pencil notations along bottom edge, a few light creases to image, and four small tack holes near edges.
This postcard was sent to his longtime friend, bar owner Jimmie Donahue, with whom Ruth and his wife socialized. It was during this trip to Mexico that the Sultan of Swat slammed what was to be the “final” final home run of his lifetime. As any baseball fanatic can attest, Ruth hit his 714th and last major league home run, a towering out-of-the-park drive off of Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Guy Bush, on May 25, 1935. Eleven years later, the owner of the Veracruz Blues of the Mexican League hired the famous slugger for $10,000 to come and bat once again in a game against the Mexico City Reds. The pitcher, Ramon Brazana, threw three balls and was removed from the game by his coach. A reliever was brought into the game and threw his first pitch straight down the middle. The 51-year-old Bambino hit it deeply into the right field bleachers, much to the delight of more than 10,000 Mexican fans. No wonder Ruth, who was already in failing health and would be diagnosed with cancer later that same year, enjoyed his Mexico trip! Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
