Born Camillo Borghese in Rome in 1550, Paul V reigned as pope from 1605 until his death in 1621. He also financed the completion of St. Peter's Basilica, Manuscript DS, in Latin, signed “Paulus Papa V,” one page, 7.75 x 10.5, November 1613. Crisply penned untranslated document, addressed to Cardinal Alessandro d’Este and authorizing him to leave for Spain, signed at the top in black ink by Pope Paul V. Second integral page bears docketing and an intact wax seal. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through middle of signature, with some light creases also affecting signature, some scattered light toning, and a repair to a small area of paper loss to lower left.
