Benedict’s pontificate was dominated by World War I, which he termed “the suicide of Europe,” and its turbulent aftermath. Maintaining strict neutrality, he advanced several peace proposals and did much to aid war victims. Manuscript DS, in Italian, signed “Benedictus PP. XV,” one page, 7.25 x 11, July 22, 1920.
