Description

Marilyn’s considerable debt to Famous Artists

Notarized DS, one page, 8.5 x 11, February 19, 1957. Marilyn signs a promissory note. In part: “I, Marilyn Monroe…hereby acknowledge that as of this date the sum of Twenty thousand three hundred fifty ($20,350) dollars is due from me to Famous Artists Corporation of Beverly Hills, California, and it is still owing and unpaid; that I promise to pay the aforementioned sum; and I hereby waive any defense of the Statute of Limitations in any action that may be brought against me to recover such sum.” Signed at the conclusion in blue ink “Marilyn Monroe.” The bottom of the document bears the notarization, embossed seal, and signature of Robert H. Montgomery Jr. In fine condition, with a light ink cancellation “X” through the text, not affecting legibility, and two punch holes to top edge.

Marilyn owed Famous Artists Corporation, a Hollywood talent agency, a considerable sum in 1957 dollars. Charles Feldman, owner of the talent agency, represented Marilyn throughout her contractual fight with 20th Century-Fox from 1954 to 1955. Many of those months were devoted to Marilyn even though she had terminated her formal agreement with the agency. Notarization of promissory note provides an impeccable witness to Monroe’s signing of the document. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
