Two letters: TLS signed “Groucho,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, May 20, 1957. Brief letter to Army Archerd. In full: “Just thought you might be interested in the type of correspondence that takes place between two comedians.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Also accompanied by a one page letter from Jack Benny to Groucho, who has actually just written in pencil on Groucho’s typed letter to him, crossing out Groucho’s ballpoint signature, and signing “Jack,” above. Groucho’s letter reads, “I don’t know who is responsible for inviting us to your Romanoff’s party, but it was sheer inspiration.” Benny writes next to it: “It was Mary’s idea. I didn’t want you—I only wanted Aden.” Groucho also writes: “It was a wonderful party and the only thing that marred it was, the waiter at our table kept calling me Red Skelton, to which Benny responds: “If you would keep those f***ing (with Benny writing out the explicative) cigars out of your mouth—someone might recognize you.” Groucho’s last paragraph reads: “Incidentally, Jack, the column on you by Army Archerd was a magnificent tribute, and much as I dislike saying it, you deserved every word of it.” Benny comments next to the paragraph, “For this, I sincerely thank you.” In fine overall condition, with a few creases.
