Vintage matte-finish 7.25 x 9.25 photo of Ruth wearing a long-sleeve athletic shirt and Yankee pinstripe pants, swinging a bat, most probably taken in the early 1930s in St. Petersburg, Florida, during the New York Yankees spring training, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To my little pal George from Babe Ruth 3-12-47.” Suede matted and framed to an overall size of 13.5 x 15.5. Silvering to darker areas of image and background, and a few light creases to background and edges, otherwise fine condition.
Although the familiar image was taken during his playing career, the autograph is dated March 1947, twelve years after Ruth’s retirement. A few weeks later, on April 27,“Babe Ruth Day” packed Yankee Stadium with almost 60,000 fans and dignitaries. He may have been replaced by younger players, but he still held the place of honor in fans’ hearts—as well as the home run records: career total, 714; season best, 60. An iconic portrait of the slugger in his mighty prime. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
