Description

Bizet corresponds with his Carmen librettist: “I'm invisible right now”

French composer (1838-1875) whose operatic masterpiece, Carmen, was completed just before his untimely death. ALS, one page, 5.25 x 8.5, no date, but after June 1869. Letter most likely to writer and librettist Ludovic Halévy. In full: “My dear Cousin, Please send and address your sketches to Monsieur Bizet (Georges), at the time at Monsieur Hippolyte Rodrigues, 3 Avenue Mathilde a Saint Gratien près Enghien les Bains - Seine et Oise. They will let me know and inform me as soon as it arrives. As for me, I'm invisible right now but I will read it with the utmost care and will write you immediately.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, some scattered light toning and soiling, and light creasing under Bizet’s signature.

Halévy (1834–1908) was a cousin of Bizet’s wife Geneviève, to whom the composer had been married since June 1869. Together with Henri Meilhac, Halévy was to write the libretto to Carmen which premiered in 1875. Carmen was not originally well-received, a bitter disappointment to the composer. Unfortunately Bizet died before the masterpiece he discusses in this letter achieved its ultimate success. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
