Description

Artist Peale “wish[es] to see the autograph of ‘Napoleon’”…which is provided here

LS in French, signed “Napoleon,” one page, 7.25 x 9, July 19, 1805. Brief five line letter from Napoleon while in St. Cloud, nicely signed at the conclusion. Letter has been affixed to a slightly larger off-white sheet. Accompanied by a one page ALS from Rembrandt Peale, one lightly-lined 5.5 x 8.5 sheet, dated January 25, 1859. Peale writes to Mr. Breer attempting to locate a Napoleon signature. Peale writes: “I wish to see the autograph of ‘Napoleon.’ There are plenty of Bonapartes in the Book Stores, but I cannot find a Napoleon. If you have not one, can you direct me where I can it.” Napoleon’s letter is in fine condition, with light intersecting folds, one affecting just the opening stroke of signature, a bit of trivial foxing, and a pencil notation and typed caption along bottom. Peale’s letter also has intersecting folds, a paperclip impression to top, and light overall toning. Terrific association! Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
