Description

Clift doodles under hypnosis

Original vintage signed pencil sketch of a man and a woman in an apparently heated conversation on an off-white 8.5 x 9.5 sheet, entitled “Fashions—1948,” and signed at the bottom, “Montgomery Clift 01/2/48.” In fine condition, with a few light creases, paperclip impression to top edge, and small, tear to right edge.

Originally part of the papers of Dr. Lewis Wolberg, the foremost pioneer of psychoanalytic hypnosis. His multi-volume book The Technique of Psychotherapy was considered a standard and his renowned 1945 work Hypo-Analysis may very well have made the revival of clinical hypnosis possible. Wolberg removed many of the stigmas formerly attached to this technique, finally bringing hypnosis into the realm of serious medical science. He became the authority on Hypo-Analysis, and the Wolberg Arm Levitation is named in his honor. His fame gained him many celebrity friends and patients, among them Alfred Hitchcock, Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Frederick March, Aldous Huxley, Fred Astaire, Nanette Fabray and a young Montgomery Clift.

Wolberg frequently had his patients write and draw under hypnosis and would instruct the hypnotized patient to open their eyes without awakening and to write, or he would give a posthypnotic suggestion to the same effect. This unusual drawing is the direct result of this technique. Accompanied by a photocopy of a Rorschach report on Clift, done under Wolberg’s instruction and interpreted by psychologist Doris Amatniek, referencing the drawing in the opening paragraph as “a flamboyant drawing of conclusion and confusion in thinking.” Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
