Description

Paul’s playful caricatures cavort on a letter to Harry Nilsson

One-of-a-kind ALS signed by McCartney as “Paul (& Linda),” one page, 8 x 13, no date. Letter to songwriter Harry Nilsson regarding The Puppy Song, recorded by Mary Hopkin. In full: “I got your song and it’s great. Do you mind if we use it for Mary’s next album, as it may not be the single, and I don’t want to hang you up waiting for us to use it. If you’d rather do something else with it right away, write and tell me, otherwise I’ll assume it’s o.k. for the album.” Along the bottom of the page, McCartney has added five caricature sketches: a man resembling a king smoking a cigarette with “Hi There,” written on his collar, two small animals which appear to be a dog and a cat, a smiling dark-haired man in a bow tie, and a woman wearing a pearl necklace. In fine condition, with a very slight brush to parenthesis at end of signature.

Harry Nilsson wrote The Puppy Song for Mary Hopkin, an 18-year old singer Paul had signed for Apple Records. One of the first artists to record for the label, Hopkin’s debut album, Post Card, would feature her version of this song. The album was produced between 1968 and 1969, placing this letter during the time Paul was a Beatle. McCartney’s doodles along the bottom of the letter offer a playful postscript to this bit of intriguing pop music history. Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RRAuction COA.
