Description

Nelson Mandela

World-renowned civil rights leader (born 1918) who, in 1994, became the first black president of South Africa. From 1964 to 1990, Mandela was imprisoned for opposing South Africa’s white minority government and its policy of apartheid; in 1993, he won the Nobel Peace Prize. Time magazine cover from the July 2, 1990, issue declaring Mandela “A Hero in America,” signed in gold ink, “N. Mandela, 3-4-5.” Accompanied by an embossed African National Congress secretarially signed letter of transmittal. In fine condition, with a failed first attempt at signing leaving a faint impression of an “NM” to Mandela’s forehead. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
