Description

Denouncing the leaders of the Confederacy

English orator and statesman. AQS on a 4.5 x 5.75 off-white sheet, Bright writes a quote from Robert Southey’s Roderick, last of the Goths. In full: “A dreadful brotherhood, in whom all turbulent vices were let loose; While Conscience, with their impious creed accurst; Drunk as with wine, had sanctified to them; All bloody, all abominable things.” Underneath, Bright adds, “Southey’s Don Roderick & may be applied to the chaotic subjects of the leaders of the great rebellion 1861-1865,” and signed at the bottom, “John Bright, Richdale, July 29, 1865.” Page is affixed to a slightly larger sheet. In fine condition, with repair to paper loss to top left corner, a few creases, and some scattered light soiling. RRAuction COA.
