TLS as president, one page, 7 x 9, White House letterhead, May 9, 1940. Letter to William C. Edwards, Chairman of the Committee for the Third Centennial Celebration of the Incorporation of the Town of Braintree. In full: “My hearty greetings to all who take part in the third centennial celebration. It seems to me that the first thought of the members of your Committee should be to resolve that the venerable fabric of the First Parish Church of Quincy shall be preserved through the centuries. Enshrining as it does the graves of our second and sixth Presidents this church will be a place of increasing historical interest as the decades pass. These Presidents—father and son—served faithfully the national interest in their day and generation and their memories must be kept sacred in the community where they take their long rest.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. In fine condition, with some scattered mild toning, and a few creases and wrinkles.
The United First Parish Church in Quincy, Massachusetts, is often referred to as the ‘Church of Presidents.’ Both John Adams and John Quincy Adams, as well as their wives, are interred beneath the church in a family crypt. John Adams financed the church’s construction, and the bulk of the granite comes from the Adams family quarry. The building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970.
The letter displays Roosevelt’s strong feelings regarding the reverence due this singular family of American patriots and leaders. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
