Description

Eugene Delacroix

French artist (1798–1863) who takes a place in the first rank of painters in the Romantic tradition and whose mastery of color and technique inspired both the Impressionist and Symbolist schools. His best known work is the stirring 1830 patriotic tableau Liberty Leading the People. ALS in French, signed “E. Delacroix,” one page, 5.25 x 8.25, February 24, 1855. Letter to Monsieur de Nilliers. In part: “I find it absolutely necessary to devote every moment at my disposal to finishing the pictures which I have planned for the exposition. In addition, I am ill and it would be impossible for me to meet you.” The Paris World’s Fair (Exposition Universelle) of 1855 dazzled many visitors including Prince Albert and Queen Victoria. Delacroix exhibited numerous paintings at the Fair, including his famous Lion Hunt. In fine condition, with light intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and some scattered mild toning. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
