Description

Rare Christy Mathewson check

As charismatic and popular as any player in the early 1900s, the college-educated Christy Mathewson won 373 games over 17 seasons, primarily for the New York Giants. Using his famous fadeaway pitch, he won at least 22 games for 12 straight years beginning in 1903. A participant in four World Series, Mathewson's lone title came in 1905 when he tossed three shutouts in six days against the Athletics. Rare personal check, 8.25 x 3, affixed to a slightly larger sheet by the vertical sides, filled out and signed boldly by Mathewson, payable to R. H. Hutchins for $4.41, February 28, 1925. In very good condition, with show-through from adhesive to both vertical sides, three vertical folds (one passing through the signature’s ‘M’), scattered light creasing, a bit of adhesive residue, and expected punch cancellations; other than the fold passing through it, the bold signature is unaffected by any of the check’s flaws. Mathewson is rare and desirable in any form. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
