American cartoonist (1913–1973) best known as the creator of Pogo, whose offbeat humor and sly political commentary earned it a place among the most beloved strips of all time. ALS signed in charcoal pencil, “Walt Kelly and Pogo,” one page, 6.5 x 10, Darien, CT letterhead, no date (circa 1949). Letter to Mrs. Maisey, in full: “Thanks for your note about Pogo—there are no back copie [sic] available, but a new book should appear late in the summer or early fall. Meanwhile Pogo has just started as a daily syndicated strip.” Signed at the conclusion by Kelly, who incorporates a wonderful and early sketch of Pogo, who adds his signature under Kelly’s! In fine condition, with scattered light soiling and copying of the text from the folding of the letter due the nature of the charcoal. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
