“The chief of police was hiding behind a parked car and shot Devol with a rifle killing him and that was the end of Devol’s career in crime”

Thief, bankrobber, kidnapper, and bootlegger nicknamed “The Rat” by J. Edgar Hoover. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, June 28, 1971. Letter to a couple requesting an autograph, and also answering several questions. In part: “Yes, that program ‘Mantrap’ was something else again…No, Devol is not serving time. He was sentenced in 1933. he escaped in 1936, was out a few months until he went into a beer joint in Enid Oklahoma one night. The owner who happened to be an ex-policeman recognized Devol from pictures out on him and called the police; Devol killed two of them, ran out into the street and jumped on the running board of a passing car…The chief of police was hiding behind a parked car and shot Devol with a rifle killing him and that was the end of Devol’s career in crime.” Signature a bit cramped, and some scattered light edge creases, otherwise fine condition.
