Description

“The English intending to advance on France” the deposed king writes in the midst of the Williamite War

Catholic monarch who became King of England, King of Scots, and King of Ireland in 1685. Some of his subjects distrusted his religious policies and alleged despotism, leading to his deposition in the Glorious Revolution. LS in French, signed “Jacques R,” one page both sides, 6.5 x 9, August 7, 1692. Letter to Monsieur l’Enesque d’ Aubune discussing the Dowager Queen, a mass for his deceased mother, and English troop movements in France. In part: “I had already learned of the indisposition of the Dowager Queen which prevented her departure…I hope she will be well enough to leave. My mind is at rest that you saw her and I see that you appreciate her worth which you could not have done without knowing her well…The English, intending to advance on France, have disembarked at Nuport and Ostand, and if the Prince of Orange [William III of England] doesn’t undertake anything before the end of this week, it appears that the armies of Flanders will disperse without doing anything more since it is so late in the season. The trip to Fontainbleau will be towards the end of this month.” Accompanied by a full translation. The Williamite War in Ireland (1689-1691), also known as the Jacobite War in Ireland was the opening conflict following the deposition of King James II in 1688 when he attempted to regain the throne of his Three Kingdoms from his daughter Mary II who replaced him jointly with her husband, William of Orange, grandson of Charles I. While William successfully defeated Jacobitism in Ireland and subsequent Jacobite Risings were confined to Scotland and England, the war was to have a lasting effect on Ireland. Letter is affixed by the left edge of its second integral page to a slightly larger sheet of heavier stock, and the integral leaf still displays its intact original red wax seal. Intersecting folds, one affecting single letter of signature, and some scattered light toning and foxing, otherwise fine condition. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
