Description

Monet hopes to be “able to at least shake your hand but nothing is less certain,” as he leaves Venice

Highly influential French painter (1840–1926) who was among the leading figures of the impressionist movement, which took its name from the title of one of Monet’s works. ALS in French, penned in bright purple ink, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8.25, September 28, 1908. Letter addressed to a “Dear Friend.” In full: “We are leaving to Venice the day after tomorrow and hope being able to at least shake your hand but nothing is less certain and if I have not come at 9:00 AM it is because it would have been impossible for me to, and you should not wait for me in case you would have to leave. But I will do my utmost to come if only to spend one hour with you in your new surroundings that will be so new to me. In haste and see you Wednesday I hope.” After his signature, Monet adds a brief postscript: “P.S. If you should be absent send me a note to [illegible city name] where we will be spending the night tomorrow.” In fine condition.
