Description

Everest conquerers including Hillary and Norgay sign their tale

Signed book: The Conquest of Everest. First edition, first printing. NY: E. P. Dutton & Company, 1954. Hardcover with dustjacket, 6 x 9, 300 pages. Signed and inscribed by the principal members of the successful 1953 British team on the first free end page, “To Teddy, E. P. Hillary,” Charles Evans, and George Lowe; signed in green ink by Tenzing Norgay on his color full page photo atop Everest, opposite the title page; signed in ink on the half-title page by 10 members of the 1952 Swiss team who were forced to abandon their attempt, including leader Edouard Wyss-Dunant; and signed on the inside front cover by Noel Odell and by the book’s author, Sir John Hunt (inscribing “Teddy, hoping you find your own ‘Everest’ one day!”). Above Hillary’s signature is an inscription “To Teddy with lots of love from Daddy and Mummy, 1954” written in the hand of Brad Washburn, famed cartographer and Everest (and McKinley) authority. Some slight toning, a bit of mild feathering to some of the fountain pen signatures, and a small pencil notation to half-title page, otherwise fine condition; the dustjacket exhibits scattered wear, chipping, and splitting. An exceptional grouping of mountainering legends. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
