Description

“In these rather tense times” FDR keeps a wary eye on Europe after the signing of the Munich Agreement

TLS as president, one page, 7 x 9, White House letterhead, October 24, 1938. Letter to a priest at St. Thomas’s in Washington, DC, politely declining an invitation to address the congregation. In part: “Armistice Day and Thanksgiving Day are recognized by the issuance of proclamations which would make supplemental remarks on my part in a way repetitious. Then, too, I have to take a good many factors into consideration in determining a date for a public address, and moreover, in these rather tense times I have to move on an almost day by day schedule.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Roosevelt’s letter comes just a few weeks after the Munich Conference, in which permission was given for the German annexation of Czechoslovakia's Sudetenland. The agreement was signed by Germany, France, Britain, and Italy. Czechoslovakia was informed by Britain and France that it could either fight Germany alone or give in to the prescribed annexations. The Czechoslovak government reluctantly yielded and agreed to abide by the agreement. The settlement gave Germany the Sudetenland and de facto control over the rest of Czechoslovakia as long as Hitler promised to go no further. On September 30, Chamberlain went to Hitler and asked him to sign a peace treaty between the United Kingdom and Germany. After Hitler's interpreter translated it for him, he happily agreed. Upon his return to Britain, Chamberlain delivered his famous "peace for our time" speech to delighted crowds in London. In fine condition, with a few mild edge creases. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
